The Marketing Push for Educational Technology: A Misguided Policy

Internet Addiction Disorder

Research at top universities, such as M.I.T., The London School of Economics, U.C.L.A., and New York University has confirmed the negative effects of electronic screen time on people, especially kids.  These negative effects include eye strain, ADHD, depression, and poor concentration and social skills.  Electronic learning devices also do not improve academic performance.  Using paper books, flashcards, and board games is better than electronic learning devices.

Beginning in the 1970's and increasing in the 1980's, 1990's and early 2000's, there was a push to equip schools with "computer rooms" to aid in instruction.  In the early days of this, the motivation was primarily to give students from poorer families access to computers because many of them did not have a computer -- or any IT technology -- at home.

A London School of Economics study of more than 100,000 primary school students found that smartphones reduce children's school marks by an average of -6.4%.  The negative result was even worse in students with poor concentration.

Robert appeared on the RTHK radio show "Talkback" debating the benefits of Educational Technology vs. the proven harmfulness.

諸如M.I.T.,U.C.L.A。

However, in the 2020's, this rationale is no longer valid:  Technology is omnipresent in student's everyday lives.  Even low-income students have smartphones.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is the professional association of children’s doctors in the US.  They have repeatedly warned about the effects on children of smartphones, tablets, and other electronic screen devices.  They have published guidelines for parents.

1. There is no evidence of any educational benefit from electronic education.
2. Children under 2 years old should not be exposed to electronic screens.
3. Parents should avoid using electronic devices such as smartphones in the presence of their young children.
4. Children under 10 years old should be limited to 1 hour per day of quality electronic screen time.
5. Children's electronic screen time can cause ADHD and SEN (learning disabilities).
6. Parents should read with their young children.
7. Parents should play non-electronic educational games with their children .
